Job Description/Requirements

The selected candidates should possess expertise in the following areas:

  • Optical Fiber: Capacity planning and the ability to test and analyze fiber characterization results, including Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) traces, source-power meter, and dispersion measurements.

  • Fiber Handling: Proficiency in working with Single Mode Fiber (SMF) cables, splice cases, Fiber Distribution Panels (FDPs), drop cables, splitters, and SFPs.

  • Microwave P2P Technology: Strong understanding of Ubiquiti and Cambium radios.

  • Router Configuration: Excellent command over Mikrotik Router configuration, and Ubiquiti and Cambium access points.

  • Networking Knowledge: Good understanding of IP addressing and subnet masking.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Fiber Installation and Maintenance:

  • Extending fiber drop cables through  the KPLC lines.

  • Splicing fibers using fiber machines and installing fiber splitters to distribute fiber strands to different homes/hostels from the junction location.

  • Testing and analyzing fiber optic systems to ensure connectivity and performance.

Wireless Technology Deployment:

  • Installing indoor/outdoor wireless P2P radios to establish connections where fiber installation is not cost-effective.

  • Setting up and maintaining local area networks (LAN) and wide area networks (WAN) using Mikrotik routers.

  • Installing access points to ensure connectivity to student hostels.

Troubleshooting and Support:

  • Addressing daily user issues, including restarting APs during KPLC outages.

  • Resolving user voucher subscription issues.

  • Preparing and testing CAT6 cables onsite, running cables from PoE switches to APs and other wireless systems.

Technical Expertise:

  • Handling and configuring network-related components such as IP addressing, network cabling, Cisco routers, switches, Ubiquiti APs, Mikrotik, cable testers, CAT6 crimping tools, and transceivers (SFP).

  • Knowledge of GPON OLT/ONT fiber technology.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Diploma in Computer Science/Math/Electrical or equivalent work experience.

  • Prior experience in networking, IT, especially WIFI, or related fields.

  • Familiarity with Mikrotik routers and Ubiquiti WIFI equipment mentioned in the job responsibilities.

  • Strong troubleshooting skills and knowledge of fiber technology.

  • Understanding of network wired/wireless technologies and terminologies, including Hotspot, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, TCP/IP, HTTP/XML, VOIP/Video Quality, etc.

  • Fully proficient in using the internet and cell phone communications.

  • Skill in website building and/or scripting will be considered a plus.

  • Knowledge of operating a motorbike would be advantageous for site visits during troubleshooting.

  • Preferred candidates should be from Bungoma and Eldoret, our new sites for expanding WIFI services.

  • Must have no drug-related issues and be able to provide a certificate of good conduct.

  • Must possess a reliable working cell phone and be reachable 24x7 by clients in case of network issues.

  • May be required to stay close to the server room or within the hostel hosting the hub. Room, board, water, and electricity will be provided.

  • In addition to a 30-minute technical interview, you must be able to travel to the site, partially funded by us, for an on-site demonstration of your ability to independently run fiber through KPLC poles, use a fiber fusion machine, and terminate/test fiber. This is not an internship; it requires a technician who can hit the ground running from day one.
