Job Description/Requirements
LOCATION: Njabini, Kenya
OFFICE HOURS: Monday - Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
POSITION STATUS: Teacher (Exempt from OT)
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP: Reports to Head of School
SALARY 70,000 Gross
Our client is a private primary school in Njabini, Kenya, which delivers quality, student-centered primary education and partner with under-resourced public primary schools in the community (“School Network”) to pilot and scale integrative, locally-led programs that support healthy schools, upskill teachers and empower girls. By building the capacity of rural school communities to address the most significant barriers to learning, they alleviate health disparities, increase gender equality, spark economic growth, and build a more equitable world.
SUMMARY OF ROLE: The Teacher is responsible for furthering the goals and strategies of the academic program at the school while promoting and modeling a professional, positive school culture in alignment with the organizational mission. The Teacher is responsible for ensuring the effective delivery of the academic curriculum, the efficient, objective-oriented operations of extracurricular activities, and achieving an inclusive, student-centered school culture that values and respects all stakeholders, including students, parents, staff, and community members. In addition, the Teacher is responsible for teaching specific classes and subjects for which he/she is duly qualified and assigned by the Head of School. Importantly, the teacher acts as a role model and contributes to an effective organizational culture at the school. The highest levels of professionalism, positive classroom management, and consistent adherence to policies and procedures are paramount. The school employs a strict “zero tolerance” policy against any form of physical or psychological corporal punishment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: “Essential duties” are those that an individual must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation or additional staff support
Academic Responsibilities: Ensure the effective delivery of the educational curriculum at the school in alignment with the requirements of Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), as may be amended from time to time by:
● Preparing and communicating lesson timetables at the beginning of each term;
● Coordinating exams and curricular assessments, including accurate data collection and analysis consistent with established standards for data management, recordkeeping, and reporting.
● Support in curriculum planning, standards for classroom organization, and strategies for teacher development;
● Serving as the primary custodian from Primary and Junior school of well-organized records and data regarding students
● Teaching subjects and/or classes as assigned by the Head of School, including teaching assignments required to fill gaps in staffing.
● Consistently following policies, procedures, and practices for the optimal operation of the school;
● Ensuring that teaching and other programs or school activities are carried out effectively, safely, and consistently with established standards and practices
● Participating in Committees, as assigned by the Head of School, Director of Education, and other school leaders, including primary responsibility for accurate recordkeeping and reporting of Committee activities and other activities that support the Mission of the Organization
● Ensuring as assigned that pupils are supervised at the start and end of the school day
● Assisting with and actively supporting the planning and supervision of extracurricular and off-campus student activities, including clubs and school trips
● Communicating immediately with the Director of Operations & Administration and Director of Education on breaches of policy and other matters involving personnel, particularly those that pose a risk to children and/or the organization; and
● To provide as required by the school’s policies detailed schemes of work and weekly planning and evaluation outlines.
● To engage with parents and guardians, administrators, and other professionals to support students’ progress.
● As the first line of children's support, detect and respond through the provided channels and resources to any concerns and issues about learning and children's safety.
● To provide a safe learning environment for all learners, achieve holistic achievement, and adopt positive discipline measures that allow all students to become lifelong learners and active participants in their lives.
POSITION SPECIFICATIONS
Education and Work Experience:
● A Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, and experience in teaching Integrated Science, Mathematics, and/or Pre-Technical
● Registration and good standing certificate with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC)
● Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience, preferably within a Kenya Primary School environment
● A minimum of three years in a school leadership position either as a department head or Senior Teacher of the school
● Master's degree and other certifications in education are an added advantage Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
● Excellent written and oral communication skills, including fluency in English and Swahili
● Exceptional at implementing all components and objectives of the CBC - Must have taught/experience for grades 6 through 8
● Well-developed and mature professional interpersonal skills; ability to interact effectively with children, teenagers, donors, partners, and colleagues at all organizational levels.
● Exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills.
● Advanced knowledge of data management
● Professional interpersonal skills; ability to interact effectively with colleagues at all organizational levels
● Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with appropriate discretion
● Ability to respond quickly and maintain composure in situations that impact the safety and security of children
Additional Requirements:
● Incident-free Children’s Check and National Police Check (Certificate of Good Conduct)
● Weekend and after-hours work is expected and required to meet organizational priorities
● Occasional travel across the School Network may be required
● Other responsibilities may be assigned to support coverage for colleagues who are on leave
