Job Summary

The SNE Manager will work in partnership with educational authorities, school Head Teachers, and SNE teachers, to drive improvements in inclusive special education. As a key member of the KidsCare management team, you will contribute to strategic planning and the continuous enhancement of care services for the children with disabilities and their families. This role requires strong project management skills to successfully plan and execute initiatives that improve the quality of inclusive education for children with mental disabilities and provide essential support to their caregivers.

Job Description/Requirements

Are you passionate about inclusive education and dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children with disabilities? KidsCare Kenya is looking for an experienced and motivated Special Needs Education (SNE) Manager to lead and enhance six Special School Units (SSUs)program in Lunga Lunga Sub-County.

About four years ago, KidsCare Kanya, in collaboration with the local government, established and equipped six Special School Units (SSUs) within six regular primary schools. At the end of 2022, these SSUs were handed over to the Kenyan Ministry of Education. Based on a partnership agreement between the government and KidsCare, we are working on a robust quality improvement program for the SSUs

Guided by the SSU quality improvement plan of KidsCare Kenya and by the relevant Kenyan government authorities, the SNE Manager will be responsible for the development, implementation, and quality assurance of six SSUs. This role involves close collaboration with the Children with Disabilities (CWD) Manager to integrate services effectively and ensure the holistic development of children with (mental) disabilities.


Position Within the Organization

The SNE Manager:

  •  Is a valued member of the Management Team.
  •  Acts as an advisor to the Director on Special Needs Education and other relevant matters.
  •  Reports directly to the Director of KidsCare.
  •  Leads, directs, and motivates the KidsCare staff members working in the SSUs.


Key Responsibilities

  •  Project Planning & Execution: Develop and oversee project plans that create sustainable value for children with mental disabilities and their caregivers. Ensure timely implementation of quality improvement initiatives.
  • Quality Development: Implement a continuous quality improvement strategy focusing on four pillars: management, inclusive education, safety & hygiene, and an inclusive environment.
  • Training & Coaching: Collaborate closely with key education stakeholders, including the MoE, CSOs, the TSC, and SNE teachers, to assess gaps in the provision of quality inclusive education so as to Design and Facilitate training programs for SNE teachers, coaches, and matrons to enhance
  • didactic, organizational, and pedagogical skills to advance inclusive education. Also design and conduct training programs for KidsCare staff, working to improve hygiene, safety, therapy, green projects, and parental/caregivers involvement within the SSUs.
  • Team Leadership: Motivate and guide the KC team working in the SSUs, fostering a positive and effective working environment.
  • Monitoring & Evaluation: Establish systems to measure, analyze, and enhance inclusive educational performance, ensuring data-driven decision-making.
  •  Risk & Issue Management: Identify potential risks, develop mitigation strategies, and address challenges impacting project success.
  •  Policy Development: Work in collaboration with government agencies, educational institutions, and stakeholders to promote awareness, influence policy discussions, and foster an inclusive learning environment in alignment with the national education frameworks.
  •  Stakeholder Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external partners, including educational authorities, specialized organizations, and funding partners. Serve as a key collaborator for SSU headteachers, teachers, and coaches.
  •  Innovation & Best Practices: Research and implement innovative educational models that enhance the quality of inclusive education while increasing caregiver and community involvement.
  •  Budget & Resource Management: Manage project budgets effectively, seek grants and sponsorships, and maintain strong relationships with individual donors.
  •  Reporting & Accountability: Provide regular reports on progress, challenges, and achievements to the management team and Director, ensuring transparency and continuous improvement. Keep donors engaged with honest updates, expressing gratitude and fostering continued support.


Required Qualifications & Experience

  •  A deep commitment to supporting children with disabilities and their caregivers.
  •  A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education, Educational Sciences, Pedagogy.
  •  At least 5 years of experience in educational development, preferably in special education or within a non-profit environment.
  •  Strong background in project management, including Proposal writing, planning, execution, and evaluation.
  •  Experience in quality management, teacher training, and coaching.
  •  Strong analytical skills and expertise in monitoring and evaluation.
  •  Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to inspire professionals and engage diverse stakeholders.
  •  A proactive, solution-oriented mindset, capable of working both independently and collaboratively.
  •  Familiarity with the Kenyan educational system is an advantage.
