Job Summary
This position is responsible for quality control and specification compliance testing. Manages and communicates test data, verifies test , executes various proficiency sample testing programs, and conducts routine laboratory tasks for all utilities in the plant.
Main Tasks & Responsibilities:
Quality assurance standard operating procedures
● Analyze and specify chemical products to be used in the plant as directed by the QEHS Specialist.
● Recommend to the operation’s correct dosages and/or blow down frequency and duration required to maintain the water chemistry within acceptable limits.
● Define the products to be used in operations.
● Instruct and monitor the procedures for the use and stocking of chemical products.
● Verifies and maintains testing instruments and ancillary test equipment
Lab analysis and reporting
● Responsible ensuring integrity of the laboratory practices for accurate quality results from all the testing points
● Co-ordinate the obtaining and analysis of fuel oil samples, treated engine water, boiler water and effluents.
● Obtain samples of cooling water of the engines, boiler water, of the discharge originating from the trays of oily water and of the separator unit of water and oil (sludge treatment).
● Take daily samples of water from the boilers, the engine cooling water, discharge from the Sludge treatment Unit, and the sewage treatment plant.
● Obtain lube oil and fuel samples from engine, auxiliary equipment and plant systems.
● Obtain samples of lubricating oil and motor fuel, auxiliary equipment and systems of the plant.
● Perform required analysis and submit results to Operations Manager
● Enter the daily results into a database for analysis and for warranty claim purposes.
● Record analytical results of tests and determinations.
● Maintain a database and analyses the data for use in decision making
Lab inventory
● Verify the use and stocking of the chemical products within safety regulations.
● Monitor and record monthly chemical consumption and stock level and coordinate with chemical suppliers on supply replenishment.
● Prepare monthly report on chemical consumption to Maintenance Manager for invoicing.
● Compiling the laboratory yearly budget for the reagents, equipment calibration and laboratory consumables.
● Compiling annual plant chemical consumption budget.
Academic qualifications and Certifications
● Minimum Higher national diploma in Analytical Chemistry.
Essential experience and Knowledge
● Minimum 5 years’ experience working in an industrial onsite lab sampling and analyzing marine oils, diesel oil, lube oil, boiler feed water, waste water, steam and condensate analysis
● Demonstrated experience working with reverse osmosis, boilers, steam turbines and industrial waste water plants
● Demonstrated experience working with fuel and lube oil analysis
● Demonstrated experience working with online oil, water and steam analysis systems
● Demonstrated experience managing a lab and a small team of junior lab technicians
● Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
● Effective communication and interpersonal skills
● Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously
