SUPERVISING : LABORATORY TECHNOLOGISTS & TECHNICIANS
REPORTING TO : MEDICAL SUPERINTENDENT
POSITION’S OBJECTIVE
Ensure the laboratory is efficiently managed to ensure quality and timely collection, testing and release of results to all clients
Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Lead the development, implementation and review of medical Standard Operating Procedures for the Department
2. Oversee the operation of the laboratory through supervision of laboratory personnel:
3. Perform medical technologist duties in support of the laboratory clinical tests and evaluate new clinical laboratory procedures, equipment, and supplies where necessary.
4. Plan and conduct experiments and procedures to devise solutions to testing problems and to evaluate published methods and techniques for incorporation into the laboratory.
5. Recommend use/purchase based on such factors as efficiency, cost effectiveness, reliability and performance by comparing new methods to those already in use, evaluating differences statistically and determining overall suitability.
6. Ensure that adequate review and approval of all laboratory results. Monitor the maintenance of instruments and equipment, ensuring that maintenance is performed in accordance with applicability standards.
7. Develop programs of instruction in such areas as safety, quality assurance, and chemical hygiene and conduct required in-service training sessions.
8. Instruct laboratory personnel on theoretical and practical aspects of medical technology and in unique handling and testing procedures.
9. Develop, review, upgrade and implement published procedures, including the definition of reference values and acceptable ranges, and interpret quality control results.
10. Verify correct instrument operation using established protocols and quality control checks.
11. Identify the cause of common problems and makes simple adjustments. Conduct quality control procedures on equipment, reagents and products, and maintain proper records for quality control reports.
12. Identify and manage control samples for use within the various sections of the laboratory.
13. Ensure correct specimen collection and handling and proper specimen preparation procedures are followed prior to shipment to reference laboratories.
14. Troubleshoot tests kits and/or equipment to determine reasons for any unacceptable performance or results
15. Ensure there are no delays in collection of samples and release of results both in Outpatient and Inpatient units
16. Ensure the Laboratory is optimally stocked at all times to avoid any stock outs
17. Lead the Laboratory department achieve local and international quality management and quality accreditation standards
18. Training and supervision of students and interns
19. Ensure use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) for all laboratory staff
20. Ensure use of official dress code including lab coats.
21. Leverage on ICT use in all purchase, handling and distribution processes
22. Develop and monitor laboratory quality indicators.
23. Oversee quality improvement processes in the laboratory
24. Prepare departmental rotas and leave plans
25. Ensure the laboratory is adequately staffed and covered
26. Monitor industry standards and periodically recommend tests that should be included or excluded from the laboratory
27. Prepare and present laboratory performance/ progress reports
28. Conducting performance appraisals for all laboratory staff
29. Any other duties as may be assigned to you from time to time.
Qualifications & Requirements
1. BSc/Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology
2. Professional certification in QMS
3. At least 3 years’ experience in a similar position
4. Excellent communication skills
5. Wide knowledge of procurement processes
6. Good knowledge of principles, applications, quality control/assurance in handling, processing and testing of human samples
7. Ability to work and make decisions independently
8. Strong communication (verbal and written) skills
9. Good interpersonal skills
10. Proficient in computer use determining correct procedures and performing variety of clinical laboratory testing
11. Maintaining quality control and quality assurance program
