Job Description/Requirements
The Home Support Special Needs Teacher will provide specialized one-on-one support for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in a home setting, focusing on individualized education plans, behavioural management, and skill development to foster independence and emotional well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
- Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Implementation
- Assess each child's unique strengths, challenges, and learning needs to develop and implement customized IEPs that align with developmental goals.
- Modify teaching techniques and learning activities to suit each child's cognitive and sensory preferences.
Behavioural Management and Intervention
- Utilize evidence-based behavioural strategies to address challenging behaviours, reinforce positive behaviour, and support emotional regulation.
- Collaborate with parents to create and maintain consistent behaviour support plans tailored to the home environment.
Skill Development and Daily Living Skills
- Teach and reinforce social, communication, and life skills, including activities of daily living, to promote independence.
- Engage children in structured and play-based learning activities that improve motor, cognitive, and adaptive skills.
Parent Training and Support
- Provide guidance and support to family members on effective teaching strategies and behavioural techniques to ensure consistent learning and behavioural outcomes.
- Offer resources and practical strategies for managing behaviours and promoting positive interactions at home.
Sensory Needs and Environmental Adjustments
- Assess and adjust the home environment to minimize sensory triggers, supporting a calm and focused learning space.
- Incorporate sensory-friendly tools and techniques to help manage sensory sensitivities and improve engagement.
Documentation and Progress Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of each child's progress, challenges, and breakthroughs, sharing regular updates with the family.
- Review and adjust teaching plans based on ongoing assessments and progress towards goals.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), Psychology, or related field.
- Specialized training in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and behaviour management.
- Previous experience working with children with ASD in a home or school setting, ideally with expertise in behaviour modification techniques.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with families and other caregivers.
Preferred Skills:
- Knowledge of ABA principles or experience with alternative therapies beneficial to autism, such as speech therapy or occupational therapy.
- Patience, creativity, and adaptability in response to each child’s needs and challenges.
- Experience with or certification in sensory integration techniques is a plus.
