Role Description

The Donkey Sanctuary Kenya (TDSK) is a subsidiary of not for profit organisation, The Donkey Sanctuary (UK), the world’s leading equine charity. Our vision is a world where every donkey has a good quality of life, and our mission is to improve the lives of donkeys every day. We will achieve this by transforming the lives of donkeys in need worldwide by fostering greater understanding, collaboration and support, and by promoting lasting, mutually life-enhancing relationships.

Since opening in 2010, TDSK has supported neglected and abandoned donkeys from across Kenya. It also offers a donkey clinic on the island of Lamu, where we directly treat donkeys in need and help the community through education of donkey owners.

We are in the process of renewing our Kenya Country strategy and we are, seeking to recruit a Director of the Board. Holding Kenyan citizenship and residency, sharing a commitment to our aims and vision, and possessing outstanding strategic, communication and interpersonal skills, you will maintain the highest standards of professionalism and integrity when performing your duties and representing the organisation.

About you:

Committed to animal welfare and the objects of the charity. Demonstrable experience in at least one or more of the following areas of expertise: Governance, strategy, business management, international development, Charity/NGO, advocacy and campaigning, partnerships Strategic thinker – able to anticipate and identify future requirements. Evidence of leadership of an organisation of a similar size to TDSK. An analytical mind-set with great problem-solving abilities. Strong influencing skills – able to communicate effectively to influence outcomes. Fluency in English (written and verbal).

About the role:

Your principal duties and responsibilities will include –

Determining TDSK’s policy and strategy in pursuit of its business and ensuring that an appropriate governance structure and policies and processes are in place, regularly reviewing same. Working with TDSK’s management team and staff (as appropriate) to ensure that such decisions are put into practice, operational plans and budgets support such strategy, and that TDSK runs effectively and in accordance with the strategy they have set out. Protecting and managing TDSK’s property and assets, maintaining sound financial management of resources and budgets and ensuring the proper investment of its funds. Ensuring that directors receive appropriate induction and training commensurate with the role, including by undertaking additional training as and when this is required. Considering and guarding against material risks to TDSK, taking professional advice where appropriate. Ensure that the views of TDS UK are regularly sought and considered as TDSK’s key stakeholder.

The contract:

Applicants for this role will hold Kenyan citizenship and residency in order to facilitate administrative and compliance tasks for TDSK Headquarters Office based in Nairobi. TDSK Directors of the Board usually meets a minimum of twice a year. In addition, Directors may be asked to join other meetings.

The role of trustee is a voluntary position and is therefore not remunerated, but reasonable travel and other expenses incurred as part of the role will be reimbursed in accordance with the organisations policy and guidance.
