Join the team that made all this work! https://www.purpose.com/About Miya Ywech Miya Ywech is a consortium of Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) in Kisumu, Kenya, dedicated to advocating climate action through zero-waste best practices. The initiative focuses on empowering underserved communities, particularly youth and women, by raising waste management awareness to create income, reduce unemployment, and protect the environment. Miya Ywech promotes the 5 R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refurbish, Rethink) to transform waste into valuable resources, fostering a cleaner and greener Kisumu. More about Miya Ywech here https://miyaywech.com/About UMI Waste (both solid and liquid) continues to pose myriad challenges to poor households in Kisumu. Even though the county government has initiated programs to mitigate the challenge, lapses in participatory approaches still exist to achieve sustainable community-led waste management initiatives. The most commonly produced waste across households include solid wastes (both organic and inorganic), fabric, and clinical waste. Improper waste management, such as burning and dumping in Kisumu, has significantly contributed to heightened climate risk vulnerabilities, especially in low-income households. In addition, unmanaged waste often devastates drainage systems, causing flooding and the formation of stagnant water that becomes the breeding site for disease-causing organisms.Purpose Climate Lab is leveraging its strengths in community organizing and movement building to change the waste status quo in Kisumu. This project aims to unite actors within and outside the community to develop sustainable, locally driven-zero-waste initiatives anchored on four principles.(i) Reduce the volume of waste in landfills(ii) Create waste-based jobs for youth and women(iii) Build a community-led waste movement(iv) Raise local voices in policy-making on waste
