Job Description/Requirements

Background

Obwombe Enterprises, in collaboration with Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA), is implementing the LEGEND project in Siaya and Homabay counties. As part of this project, Obwombe is working to support 15 small entrepreneurs (SEs) in enhancing their business and financial capacities. This initiative aims to organize the SEs into small, manageable groups, provide them with essential financial literacy training through the Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) model, and guide them through the certification process to access greater financial opportunities through formal institutions. 


Objective

The purpose of this TOR is to outline the requirements for a qualified business consultant to deliver financial literacy training, organize the SEs for efficient management, and support their certification process to access financial services.


Scope of Work

The business consultant will be responsible for the following tasks:


1.Organize SEs into Groups

  • Assess the already established15 SEs groups and help them establish a working structure among them. 
  • Facilitate group cohesion and introduce them to group management principles.


2.Financial Literacy Training

  • Conduct an introductory session to familiarize SEs with the VSLA model.
  • Deliver practical financial literacy training, focusing on saving, budgeting, and basic financial record-keeping.
  • Teach SEs about loan management, interest calculation, and loan repayment principles under the VSLA structure.


3.Formalization and legal Registration 

  • Guide SEs through registration process, ensuring they meet the requirements to become legally recognized entities.
  • Advise SEs on the necessary documentation and regulatory requirements.
  • Facilitate access to relevant institutions and assist SEs in completing necessary registration documents.


4.Access to Financial Institutions

  • Provide training on financial services available through formal institutions.
  • Guide SEs on how to approach financial institutions and prepare necessary documents for loan or grant applications.
  • Connect SEs to financial resources and institutions that align with their business needs.


Deliverables

The business consultant will be required to deliver the following within the project timeline:


1.Inception Report

  • A detailed work plan, including a schedule of activities and training materials.


2.Training Sessions

  • Complete financial literacy training for each group, as per the VSLA model.


3.Support on registration process

  • Progress report on SEs’ registration process, including any completed applications and support documents.


4.Final Report

  • A comprehensive report detailing the outcomes of the training, certification progress, group organization, and financial institution linkages.


Duration

The assignment will be carried out over a 30-day period from the date of contracting.


Required Qualifications

  • Business consulting experience with a focus on financial literacy and small enterprise development.
  • Proven expertise in financial literacy training, preferably with VSLA methodology.
  • Knowledge of legal certification processes for small businesses in Kenya.
  • Experience working with small enterprises or community groups.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
