The Kenya Employee Satisfaction Survey 2021 sampled up to 1,760 employees from the ages of 18 to over 45 years, ranging from all levels of the economy and across different locations in the country.
Respondents in Nairobi and other small cities ranked competitive package, financial stability of a company and career growth as their top three most important intrinsic traits while respondents in Kisumu ranked competitive package, job security and financial stability of a company.
Employees in Mombasa ranked competitive package, financial stability of a company and job security as their top three most important intrinsic traits.
Responders in Kisumu and Mombasa ranked job security as one of their top intrinsic traits. This could be due to limited opportunities in their respective cities as they are not based in the capital city which usually offers more opportunities because of its strategic positioning as a commercial hub.

Location and Intrinsic and Extrinsic Traits
All locations that participated in the survey saw their value offering as equal to their competitors but what makes Mombasa stand out is the support it offers its community by leveraging its location as a tourist and leisure centre.
Nairobi, being the political and economic centre of the country, is always in the spotlight as this attracts a lot of international guests and can potentially influence local tourism enjoyment. This, therefore, leads to an increased demand for quality services and products, which may be conducive to raising business owners’ brand awareness.
Kisumu, being the traditional trade centre, is associated with a strong trading culture and the culture of interacting with locals and members of the community to source services and products.
