Primary Responsibilities 

Reporting to the Managing Director and working closely with respective business heads, the Manager, Legal Services shall provide strategic leadership to the Legal Department and implement strategies to safeguard the Company’s interests. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Development, implementation and review of the departmental strategic objectives
  • Provide advice and opinions to the management in order to compliance with all statutory issues 
  • Oversee the negotiating, drawing, reviewing and vetting of contracts, leases and other legal instruments/documentation 
  • Interpret legal texts for the Company and assist management in interpreting and applying statutes, rules and regulations to ensure compliance of the Company.
  • Participate in preparing and or represent the Company in court and other legal proceedings as a witness to protect the interests of the Company.
  • Providing secretarial duties to the Board of Directors for the meetings of the Board, Board Committees and AGM.
  • Provide legal opinions/advice on legal implications on internal policies, procedures and other business matters affecting the Company.
  • Maintain legal database of the Company including recording information on on-going cases for the Company, monitoring of the cases and liaising with the advocates and the business to ensure successful completion of matters.
  • Coordinate preparation of monthly/quarterly reports and responsible for performance of staff in the legal department.

 

Key Qualifications

  • Holder of LLB degree from a recognized University, while Masters and Post graduate qualifications will be an added advantage.
  • Be an advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid practicing Certificate
  • Certified Public Secretary (CPS) (K) will be an added advantage.
  • Minimum Five (5) years’ experience in providing legal services in a commercial environment, of which three (3) should have been at a level of management.
  • Experience/exposure in handling Board affairs as a Secretary in Board meetings.
  • Excellent knowledge of corporate operations, corporate law, law of contracts, conveyancing laws and insurance law.

Competence and Personal Attributes:

The holder of this position must demonstrate good understanding of the insurance business, excellent leadership and business relationship skills, negotiation, interpersonal communication skills. 

In addition He/ She must be able to work both independently, work under pressure and manage time effectively
